Technical Analyst - Cybercrime Operations (AFP Band 6)

AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE (AFP)

The Technical Analyst position does not require the use of police powers. Members engaged in this role will form part of the professional stream.

AFP Cybercrime Operations' primary responsibility is to prevent, mitigate, investigate and prosecute computer related crimes under the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995. In order to fulfil this responsibility, the AFP employs technical specialists capable of providing highly technical and sound advice in relation to computer exploitation events, overt and covert intelligence collections and lead development of new collection and analysis techniques to meet the demands of this fast paced and highly specialised crime type. The teams operate in a cooperative arrangement with Australian and international law enforcement agencies, the financial sector, key private sector and government organisations.

The Technical Analyst works alongside Senior Technical Specialists and Federal Investigators and assists AFP business through the provision of a variety of operational and support functions to Cyber Crime Operations teams. The primary purpose of the role is to provide investigations teams with the highly technical skills and experience required to undertake the increasingly complex investigation of national and international cybercrime offences affecting Australia.

As a Team Member in the AFP you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

Essential requirements, skills or experience:

• Contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.

• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant technical discipline and/or a demonstrated level of knowledge and experience in IT security.

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a directly relevant field (this may include skills and experience developed through tertiary studies, work experience or otherwise, and the ability to effectively demonstrate those skills.

Desirable requirements, skills or experience:

• Ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret Positive Vetting;

• SANS Sec 401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style;

• SANS For 500: Windows Forensic Analysis;

• SANS For 508: Advanced Digital Forensics, Incident Response, and Threat Hunting;

• SANS Sec 560: Network Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking;

• A background or experience in Systems Administration;

• A background or experience in scripting and/or coding and programming;

• Knowledge and/or experience of TCP/IP fundamentals, network infrastructure and information security domains.

Eligibility:

• To be eligible you must be an Australian Citizen.

• A Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.

• This recruitment is being used to fill current vacancies and create a pool for future vacancies that may arise over the next 12 months.

• Analysis of network data captures to identify offences and offenders;

• Analysis of malware to identify offender infrastructure and artefacts;

• Conducting open source intelligence collection and analysis to assist investigations;

• Providing technical advice and assistance at search warrants.
