The Summer Internship

At Discord, we offer a personalized experience for interns, and our aim is to offer an experience that mimics what it is like to actually work here. We match qualified interns with projects and groups, based on interests and skill sets and fully embed interns within those groups for the summer. Internships are paid and are a minimum of 12 weeks, targeting a start date in June to accommodate varying school calendars. Conditions permitting, our 2023 summer internships will be remote, with an opportunity to spend a week in the office at some point during the program.

The Team

The Security Engineering team at Discord collaborates across Engineering, IT, and Product to build services, tools, and functionality that help keep Discord safe. We implement solutions so that the rest of the company can move quickly while maintaining peace of mind that they will be building in a secure way.

What you'll be doing

• Application Security
  
  
  
  
  • Build and deploy tooling to help internal teams visualized and understand their security posture.
  
  
  • Build functionality to extend our use of Code Stewards at Discord
  
  
  
  


• Platform Security
  
  
  
  
  • Investigate and expand our use of canaries internally throughout our infrastructure to better identify bad actors as they attack
  
  
  • Deploy tooling to visualize our infrastructure assets and recommend pragmatic security improvements with that information (e.g. Cartography)
  
  
  • Improve tooling around our IAM and access requests flows to bring them closer to our users
  
  
  
  


• Detection & Response
  
  
  
  
  • Build integrations for data enrichment to our current log sources and improve current detections capabilities
  
  
  • Expand our visibility by identifying log sources for ingestion or deploying canary in our corporate/production environment
  
  
  • Design and implement response automation work
  
  
  • Build tools or scripts to integrate with our current infrastructure to perform endpoint forensic collections for different OS flavors (Mac, windows, linux)
  
  
  
  


• Enterprise Security
  
  
  
  
  • Help build infrastructure to support trusted devices in a zero-trust environment
  
  
  • Deploy tooling to eliminate Discord’s reliance on VPN technologies
  
  
  
  

You’ll Thrive In This Role If (Role Requirements)...

• You are in the process of obtaining a Bachelors (rising Junior or Senior), Masters, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or related field.


• You have a passion for solving security problems with software!


• You are proficient in Python, Rust, or similar programming language.

Salary of $67/hour*
