dbt Labs is growing unusually fast and has amazing tailwinds working in their favor. The product and engineering orgs are adding headcount rapidly, such that dbt Labs can build the best version of this product for their customers and community. As engineering grows, the Security team must grow, too, so dbt Labs is now seeking a VP of Security that will report to Connor Mcarthur, CTO & Co-Founder. Security is a focal point of dbt's key features, and this leader will ensure that the security organization provides essential security operational services, is directly engaged in the development and release processes, and offers advisory services to better enable the business to function while anticipating and neutralizing risk. dbt plans to hire dramatically across security operations, compliance, engineering, and IT over the coming years.


In this role, you can expect to:
  • In the next 12 months this team will grow to 20-25, and the year after that it will double (or more) in headcount as the org adds new functions.
  • Build a security engineering organization that consistently delivers value by:
  • Aligning initiatives with company level OKRs, and hitting those measurable goals
  • Inspiring the security team and creating space for the team to deliver those creative solutions into production
  • Demonstrating consistent momentum on key organizational build-out goals, internal security initiatives, and greenfield experiments
  • Ensuring balance between building resilient security features for long-term quality, and short-term value delivery — dbt wants consistent momentum over the coming years
  • Build an exceptional team by:
  • Being hands-on with recruiting and interviewing, both in directly selecting candidates and building a recruiting function that excels
  • Creating opportunities for direct and indirect reports to excel in their roles and grow themselves in their careers
  • Create and contribute to a culture of collaboration, trust, openness, and learning within Security Engineering.

    You are a good fit if you:
  • Experience managing security engineering and compliance teams at scaling organizations.
  • Experience hiring security talent in an extremely competitive market. 
  • Extremely strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Set ambitious goals and measure success every step of the way..
  • Background in, and deep interest in, technology. Dbt needs leaders who empathize with the Engineering ICs on our team.
  • Strong organization skills. A demonstrated ability to, in coordination with the team, navigate complex problem spaces with multiple possible solutions: upfront planning and estimation, navigating complex dependencies and unknowns, managing expectations and proactively communicating with the rest of the organization, pursuing simple, de-risked solutions that satisfy requirements
  • Experience managing cross-functional security organizations, including managing other managers.


  • You'll have an edge if you have:
  • Experience managing fully-remote teams.
  • Experience managing large engineering organizations (20+ engineers).
  • Experience at extremely fast-growth startups.

  • What to expect in the interview process:
  • Phase 1: Initial meeting with the CTO
  • Initial meeting with the People Team 
  • Phase 2: Presentation and opportunistic meetings: Opportunistic meetings & 1:1 meeting with stakeholders
  • Presentation panel should be made up of individuals from engineering and security.
  • Phase 3: Opportunistic meetings. At this stage, the candidate may want to meet more members of our team. If they have made it to this stage, dbt wants to sell them on the opportunity by granting these meetings.
  • Phase 4: Wrapping up
