The Security Development team at Zendesk build and maintain secure, reliable, and easy to use authentication and security features for all of Zendesk’s customers, products and services. 

We’re looking for a top-tier backend engineer to assist in determining technical direction for our login experience and authentication systems. This individual will be relied upon to understand high-scale, interconnected systems and drive forward projects to change those systems safely and effectively, while accounting for cost, reliability and security impact.

 

We are seeking an engineer who is an excellent communicator capable of presenting technical concepts and constraints to different audiences - product managers, engineers, designers, program managers, and engineering directors/VPs. We will often be looking to you to advise us on how best to navigate a changing world! Having a solid understanding of security and authentication is a must for this role.

What you’ll be doing

  • Work with architects, product managers, designers, and engineering managers to establish and communicate a technical vision for Zendesk’s login experience.

  • Provide technical leadership to a closely knit and diverse team to deliver value to our customers by crafting and building a secure, easy-to-use login experience.

  • Deliver enterprise grade software and experience some of the challenges presented working at a global scale. We own some of the largest scale services within Zendesk.

  • Proactively motivate changes to improve system reliability, stability and performance, and also foster standard methodologies, high quality code, and appropriate test coverage among other technical contributors.

  • Mentor engineers across teams and disciplines, and provide suggestions to improve team efficiency.

 

What you bring to the role

Required:

  • Proven experience in a large-scale software development environment focused around security or authentication.

  • Sound understanding of web authentication patterns and good knowledge and awareness of the latest trends in browser security.

  • Passion for code quality and implementing effective testing and validation practices to ensure systems always remain reliable.

  • You’re a highly effective communicator, both in written form and verbally; you are able to communicate technical concepts to a variety of audiences.

  • You believe building phenomenal software is a team effort and you enjoy mentoring and learning from others through pairing, code reviews, and tech talks.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience implementing multi-tenant authentication systems at scale in a SaaS environment.

  • Expert knowledge of Javascript, HTML, and CSS.

  • Experience with Ruby, Scala, or Go.

  • Experience with Kubernetes, AWS, and Docker.

  • Experience with evented architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar tech.

  • Knowledge of site reliability engineering practices around monitoring, alerting, and application capacity management.

 

Tech Stack

  • Our code is a split between Ruby on Rails and microservices written in Scala and Go

  • We use AWS Aurora to store data in MySQL and Kafka to stream events between services

  • We use Kubernetes and AWS to deploy and scale our applications
